ARCHICAD 18: Join the IFC and COBie flow – Part 1 – Project Info

The latest version of Graphisoft ARCHICAD was released earlier in the summer and whilst all the headlines will go to the big features like rendering and revision management there are new features which for workflows utilising IFC and COBie are really great improvements. To many these changes in ARCHICAD 18 will not be abundantly clear to the average user. However these changes will allow data to become more utilised even to those who don’t understand IFC or COBie particularly well. This blog piece is going to focus on the changes to the ‘Project Info’ dialogue box, although subsequent pieces will look at further changes. Continue reading

Vision to reality: Bradford College case study

When Bond Bryan invested in our authoring platform back in 1994 we had a clear vision that 3D models would play an important part of the future of the construction industry. When we set off on our journey, the ability to create 3-dimensional visualisations was one of the primary goals of creating a model for the project. For years we were focussed on producing a visualisation that could ‘sell’ our ideas to clients. Looking back these visualisations were crude by today’s standards but they have always been and continue to be a key part of our overall service. Continue reading

Why use IFC?

Following my last detailed and highly technical post about model creation related to IFC, I received a comment on the blog piece from fellow Graphisoft ARCHICAD user and expert, Link Ellis from ArchiLINK. Link was seeking more of an overview to how IFC works for his clients. I think its fair to say that many people would like this, including me. Unfortunately I am not aware of any document that tackles this at present. It is something I have raised and we have discussed at buildingSMART UK Technical Group meetings. Hopefully this will become available in due course. In the meantime I will continue to share my IFC understanding (particularly related to ARCHICAD) and thoughts through this blog. Continue reading

Practical application of IFC & COBie: Model Creation

“Criticism comes easier than craftsmanship” Zeuxis (approx. 400BC)

For those of you who don’t know me too well, I am somewhat obsessed with IFC, or at least obsessed with working out facts from fiction with IFC exchange. Simply stating “IFC doesn’t work, therefore I refuse to use it” is boring and fundamentally unhelpful. It’s like saying “my phone lost reception so I am never using a phone again”. It’s also too easy to believe certain software companies aren’t interested in improving their IFC implementation. Come on, we can all do better than that. Nothing is perfect and that includes all authoring tools without exception and I am not going to pretend IFC is perfect either, it is far from it. Yet I know that it is perfectly usable for our live projects. Continue reading

SketchUp to IFC (and COBie) via ARCHICAD

Introduction

Before diving into this blog piece i wanted to explain first that whilst i am an ArchiCAD user i always try to look at the bigger picture of BIM, particularly with regards to data. In fact i am becoming more and more uninterested in what can be done in ARCHICAD. There are already plenty of users focussed on asking Graphisoft for ARCHICAD feature improvements that are primarily designed to benefit the model author. My focus is all on the data and how we can use it and export it. For me, my simple mantra is if you can’t export it from an authoring package, and generate a benefit to others, it doesn’t exist. This perhaps may seem a little extreme but with this thought pattern it allows me to focus on the bigger picture of BIM. Continue reading
