Understanding Element Classification for IFC 2×3 exchange in ARCHICAD 18/19 – Part 1 – Relationships

Introduction

In an earlier post we looked at the requirements of COBie for both Components and Types. This series of posts are highly technical posts and not something I would expect users to understand in depth, although I know some of our power users will try and follow them. However this kind of understanding is important if you are setting up templates for ARCHICAD users. There is a fair bit of detail to understand so the information is split into three posts. We will look at the relationship between Components and Types in this post. Continue reading

COBie 2.4, BS 1192-4:2014 and ARCHICAD 18/19 – Part 5: System, Assembly, Connection, Spare, Resource, Job, Impact, Document, Coordinate, Attribute and Issue

Introduction

We previously covered Instruction, Contact, Facility and Floor, Space and Zone, Component and Type. In this final post we look at the remaining parts of the COBie schema including Systems, Coordinates and Attributes .

COBie 2.4, BS 1192-4:2014 and ARCHICAD 18/19 – Part 4: Type

Introduction

In the previous posts we have covered Instruction, Contact, Facility, Floor, Space and Zone and Component. In this post we will focus on COBie’s requirements at the Type level. Types are something that the vast majority of ARCHICAD users will probably not be familiar with. However many other BIM tools filter data by Type so it is important to understand how this works when it comes to exchanging models both for IFC and COBie. Continue reading

COBie 2.4, BS 1192-4:2014 and ARCHICAD 18/19 – Part 3: Component

Introduction

In the previous two posts about COBie we have looked at Instruction, Contact, Facility and Floor and then Space and Zone. In this post we will look at the data required by COBie 2.4 and BS 1192-4:2014 for Components. Continue reading

COBie 2.4, BS 1192-4:2014 and ARCHICAD 18/19 – Part 2: Space and Zone

Introduction

This is the second in a series of posts about COBie 2.4, BS 1192-4:2014 and ARCHICAD. In the last post we looked at Instruction, Contact, Facility and Floor requirements of COBie and BS 1192-4. In this post we will look at Space and Zone information. Continue reading

COBie 2.4, BS 1192-4:2014 and ARCHICAD 18/19 – Part 1: Instruction, Contact, Facility and Floor

Introduction

For the past 12 months i’ve been presenting ‘The COBieNATOR’ which is a LIVE demonstration of COBie’s relationship to IFC. First showcased at BIM Show Live 2014 (see here for more details) I was subsequently asked to present it at a number of other events both in the UK and abroad. Having toured the world presenting the class, I thought it would be useful to share some of the information we presented in a more structured format. ARCHICAD 19 Signature Building

Introduction

So Graphisoft ARCHICAD 19 has finally been announced!! It feels like we have been waiting longer this year for its release than previous years. That’s partly because this year The David Hockney Building for Bradford College project which we designed has been selected as the signature building for ARCHICAD 19! This really is very cool!! ARCHICAD 18: Join the IFC and COBie flow – Part 3 – Model export

In this final piece in this series about some of the main improvements to IFC and COBie workflow (there are more of course around openBIM) we will look at the enhancements that have been made to geometry export settings. (This piece is primarily focussed on IFC but in time I can see how these changes will also benefit COBie workflows, particularly with regard to the Assembly Worksheet). The new features might be missed by some users but these changes really are going to have a significant impact on the quality of the models we export to others. Continue reading

ARCHICAD 18: Join the IFC and COBie flow – Part 2 – Data mapping

In the last post we looked at Project Info which briefly mentioned data mapping to IFC fields. In this post we will specifically look at the IFC data mapping in ARCHICAD 18. Whilst there are some great features in the latest version of ARCHICAD, the IFC mapping is definitely my personal favourite new feature. For me, this is real BIM! Rendering is always high on architects wish lists and grabbed a lot of the headlines. However the need to create, manage and check data efficiently is imperative for us as we move towards the UK Government target of achieving “Level 2 BIM’ by 2016. Continue reading
